The Rocket Scientist (Update)

A couple weeks ago I wrote about my conversation with Henry Hoffstot, a former Army counterintelligence agent whose unit was in on the capture and brief interrogation of German rocket scientist Werner Von Braun.  Henry remembers conversing with Von Braun as a Signal Corps photographer captured footage of the newly captured prize.

I’m happy to say I found the footage.  Here’s a still from film footage that appeared in an episode of PBS’s “Secrets of the Dead.”  It’s from 37:27-28 of the episode.

Werner Von Braun with broken arm on the left and Henry Hoffstot on the right.

Here’s another shot straight on:

Jack Harney, one of Henry’s comrades in his CIC unit attached to the 44th Division, led me to the source.  Their intertwined stories are interesting ones and illustrative of the changing course of the war and the Army’s needs.  Jack went from Harvard to radio operator with the cavalry to the Army Specialized Training Program (ASTP) to combat infantry to counterintelligence, all in the space of two years!

I’m beginning to be able to spot the ASTP alumni, and in another post, I’ll explain why.
