Local Veterans’ Portraits Win Cover of the Year

Tom Kerrane, publication manager with Hibu community news magazines, announces that the June 2013 cover of Beaver Life, featuring a collage of local veterans, not only was voted the best cover for the month of June, but it also won Hibu magazine’s 2013 Cover of the Year award.

There are more than 600 Hibu community magazines, says media analyst Jim Romensko. The 32-page full-color magazines, which focus on local news and events, are widely circulated to households in over 20 states.

Kevin Farkas, director of the Veteran Voices of Pittsburgh Oral History Initiative, wrote the Beaver Life article profiling the organization’s efforts that preserve and share the stories of local veterans.  The oral history project, in partnership with the nonprofit Veterans Breakfast Club, has conducted over 250 interviews since 2012.

Kerrane composed the award winning cover using Farkas’ photographic montage of local veteran portraits.  The images are from the Veteran Voices of Pittsburgh archive and include photographs by Farkas and contributing photographer Andy Marchese.
